There are 2 main kinds of springs, torsion and extension. Extension springs run along the tracks parallel to your ceiling. Torsion springs are wound around a bar that is on top of your garage door opening.

In the majority of cases if one of your springs is broken it will be completely not possible to open your garage door. The exception is if you have a single door and it is made of a light metal. In any case it is best not to try to open your door yourself. It can lead to injury.

Torsion springs are difficult to replace. If you have had no definite hands on training on how to replace your tension spring, do not even think about it. Not only that, but torsion springs are hard to find at local stores. Extension springs may be replaced by an enterprising do it yourself homeowner. A limited supply of extension springs can be found at hardware or home improvement stores.

However here's an item you can and should fix for yourself. When you've got an opener, you also have some sort of interrupter device that retains the door from closing if its course is blocked.

One cause may be that your stop/reverse units have been bumped and are no longer pointing at each other. If adjusting the beams does not handle your difficulty, vigilantly look around the opening of your garage door. Whatever might be blocking the door's path may not be totally apparent. Look carefully.

If you have looked high and low for the thing blocking your garage door to the point that you have become frustrated, it may be that nothing is blocking it. Occassionally a fleck of dirt, a bug or condensation has gotten on the lenses of your stop/reverse lights. Wipe the lenses with a dry cloth and see if that works.

If cleaning the lenses does not make your problem go away, the fault may lie with your garage door opener. You may have a bad sprocket or bad logic board.
