Garage Doors Will Disappear

Garage doors have two main styles of springs. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of your garage. They get their power by extending. Torsion springs run along a bar you can observe above your garage door when it is closed. Torsion springs get their power from twisting.

In the majority of cases if one of your springs is broken it will be absolutely not possible to open your garage door. The exception is if you have a single door and it is made of a light metal. In any case it is best not to try to open your door yourself. It might lead to injury.

Torsion springs are tough to replace. If you have had no specific hands on guidance on how to replace your tension spring, don't even think about it. Not only that, but torsion springs are difficult to find at local stores. Extension springs may be changed by an enterprising do it yourself homeowner. A limited supply of extension springs can be found at hardware or home improvement stores.

If you try to shut your garage door using your opener and the door goes part way down, then stops and goes back up, you most likely have an object blocking your door's travel path. Or perhaps not

By far the most common sensor that stops and reverses your garage door is a pair of "eyes" that are positioned toward the bottom of your garage door's track on either side of the door.

Does your garage go down, then back up for no perceptible reason? If you have carefully looked for for something blocking of the door and can't find anything, you may have bumped your stop/reverse lights out of alignment.

If adjusting the beams does not handle your difficulty, vigilantly check around the opening of your garage door. Whatever might be blocking the door's path may not be entirely apparent. Look carefully.

If you've looked high and low for the item blocking your garage door to the point that you have become frustrated, it may be that nothing is blocking it. Sometimes a fleck of dirt, an insect or condensation has gotten on the lenses of your stop/reverse lights. Wipe the lenses with a dry cloth and see if that works.

Another cause of an unreliable garage door is that your opener's logic board or gear sprocket has malfunctioned.

While a homeowner armed with an adventurous spirit and a certain quantity of mechincal aptitude can replace a logic board and a gear sprocket, perhaps the easiest course of action is to just call a garage door professional and have the problem taken care of.
